The International Conference Al-bustān: Aristocratic estates and the construction of peri-urban landscapes in al-Andalus and Sicily, organised by the Laboratory of Archaeology and Architecture of the City (LAAC) of the School of Arab Studies (EEA-CSIC) together with the UGR-CSIC Associated Unit, is taking place within the framework of the Research Project "Medieval Almuniases in the Mediterranean: History and conservation of peri-urban cultural landscapes" (PID2019-111508GB-I00) of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation.

This scientific event, which will take place on October the 6th, 7th and 8th in the cities of Murcia and Granada, will offer visits and conferences given by international researchers of the highest level: historians, curators, archaeologists, art historians, philologists, architects, landscape architects, botanists, cultural managers, academics and other professionals, aimed at an audience interested in deepening the analysis of peri-urban estates, given their economic relevance and the value they had as a sign of ostentation and power.

In order to facilitate attendance and participation by all those interested, the event will be offered in a dual format, with both in-person and online registration. In addition, there is also a type of participation consisting of the presentation of scientific posters (see Call for Posters section), which will be exhibited after selection.

Al-bustān aspires to become an open, dynamic and high-quality scientific forum for debate and reflection, which will help to understand and broaden the knowledge about the construction and functions of the almunias of al-Andalus and medieval Sicily.

Key dates:

  • 24 August: deadline for the submission of posters.
  • 30 September: deadline for registration.
